The Fort Museum of the NWMP and First Nations Interpretive Centre

The Fort Museum of the North West Mounted Police and First Nations Interpretive Centre in Fort Macleod, Alberta, is a vibrant historical site dedicated to preserving the legacy of the North West Mounted Police (NWMP), the precursor to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and the rich history of the local First Nations. Established in the 1950s as a replica of the original 1874 fort located about three kilometers away, the museum offers an immersive experience into the late 19th-century Canadian frontier. It features artifacts like NWMP uniforms, First Nations clothing, a restored carriage ambulance, and heritage buildings, alongside interactive elements such as a catwalk where visitors can experience the Mounties’ historical perimeter watch. The museum’s mission, operated by the not-for-profit Fort Macleod Historical Association, is to captivate audiences through authentic storytelling and engaging experiences.

A highlight of the museum is its NWMP Musical Ride, a re-enactment of the tradition that began in 1876 at Fort Macleod, predating the official RCMP Musical Ride. Unlike the RCMP’s performances, which feature professional police officers, the Fort Museum’s ride showcases local young riders, often teenagers, dressed in period red serge uniforms, performing intricate cavalry drills choreographed to music. These daily summer performances, running from July 1 to late August, demonstrate impressive control, timing, and coordination as the riders guide their horses through formations in a 20-minute show, narrated by a museum staff member. The ride, while not the official RCMP version, is the only on-site musical ride in Canada and offers a glimpse into the NWMP’s historical practices, originally developed to break the monotony of drills and provide entertainment.
