Glow of Wonder: First-Time Magic at High River's Balloon Glow
Under the deepening twilight sky of September 26, 2025, the Wallaceville Glow Site in High River, Alberta, came alive with an otherworldly symphony of flames and colour. As part of the Heritage Inn International Balloon Festival, running through September 28, this free evening event from 5 to 9 p.m. drew families, friends, and first-timers like me to witness the iconic Balloon Glow. Tethered giants, their envelopes unfurling in stripes of rainbow reds, blues, and yellows, stood sentinel against the dusk, illuminated from within by bursts of propane that echoed like distant thunder.
For me, this was uncharted territory, a new adventure after years of chasing everyday thrills. Arriving as the sun dipped below the foothills, I was instantly captivated. The first photo captures the serene lineup: a cluster of balloons in vibrant hues, their fabrics softly aglow, with a hint of orange flame teasing the night. It's a quiet prelude, the crowd's murmurs blending with the crisp prairie air, as the setting sun bathes everything in a golden farewell. No flights tonight, just pure, grounded spectacle, a welcome change after wind-scuttled attempts at daytime launches earlier in the week.
Then, the magic ignited. The second image freezes the heart of it: a majestic balloon, its multicolored panels flaring to life under a roaring burner, flames dancing like fireflies in the basket below. Surrounded by a ring of excited onlookers, kids wide-eyed, adults snapping photos, the heat you could feel from yards away turned the ordinary into the extraordinary. Food trucks sizzled nearby with poutine and treats, while live tunes kept the vibe festive, but it was the balloons that stole the show. Their designs, whimsical patterns and bold geometrics—revealed themselves panel by panel, a canvas of artistry lit by human ingenuity.
This first-time glow wasn't just beautiful; it was restorative. In a world of rush and routine, standing there amid the blasts and glows felt like permission to pause, to let the wonder wash over you. High River's festival has a way of making the impossible feel intimate, and these shots are my snapshot of that spark.
