Powerful Beauty at Elbow Falls, Kananaskis Country

Hey everyone! Here’s a clip from my recent visit to Elbow Falls — one of the most accessible and impressive waterfalls in the Canadian Rockies, just a short drive southwest of Calgary.  albertaparks.ca 

The Elbow River roars through dramatic rock formations, creating powerful cascades and turquoise pools that are absolutely mesmerizing, especially during high water in spring and early summer.Quick Facts & How to Visit  Located in Elbow Falls Provincial Recreation Area, about 67 km (42 mi) southwest of Calgary, roughly 30 km west of Bragg Creek on Highway 66.   
The main viewpoint is super easy to reach — a short, mostly paved trail with stairs and viewing platforms. Perfect for all ages and fitness levels.   

You’ll need a Kananaskis Conservation Pass to park and access the area on most days. 
Great Money-Saving Tip: The first Wednesday of every month is Wilderness Wednesday — entry is FREE (no Conservation Pass required)! That’s exactly when I went last time, and it was perfect.  

The Raw Beauty of Elbow Falls
There’s something special about standing above these rushing waters with the forested mountains all around. The sound of the river, the mist in the air, and the rugged Alberta wilderness make it a place that feels truly alive. Whether you’re there on a sunny day watching the water sparkle or on a moody overcast afternoon, the falls never disappoint.

Safety First – Especially with Wildlife 
Kananaskis is bear country (and home to other wildlife like cougars, elk, and deer). Always: 

• Make noise while hiking so you don’t surprise animals.   
• Stay alert and keep your eyes open.   
• Give wildlife plenty of space — never approach or feed them.   
• Stay on marked trails and keep a safe distance from the fast-moving river, especially with kids or dogs. 

These precautions help keep both you and the animals safe so everyone can enjoy this incredible place.
