Mister Wonder Bread rolled into Calgary once again, and the Mini Moto Olympics delivered exactly what we love about this little scene: pure, unpretentious fun.
This isn’t a massive production. No big grandstands, no corporate circus. Just a sunny parking lot, a mountain of bright orange cones, a bunch of enthusiastic riders on everything from tiny pit bikes to wild custom builds, and a community that always makes you feel welcome. We’ve now been to at least two (maybe three?) of their events, and every single time the people are the real highlight — friendly, easy-going, and genuinely happy to share the day with anyone who shows up with a small bike and a sense of humour. The obstacle course itself is pure chaos in the best way. Cones everywhere. Tight turns. Slippery pavement. Riders pushing their little machines harder than they probably should. You get the full spectrum: silky-smooth talent, last-second saves, and the occasional glorious tip-over that has the whole crowd laughing and cheering at the same time. Between the action we wandered the Show & Shine area and, of course, found a few favourites. One bike in particular stopped us in our tracks — a beautiful little blue Honda that immediately transported us back to the tiny mopeds and mini bikes you still see puttering around Europe. Classic shape, perfect stance, pure nostalgia on two wheels. Absolute icon. Shout-out to the local Calgary bike shop and the organizers for putting this on. These grassroots days are what keep the mini moto spirit alive. No egos, just good people, small engines, and a parking lot full of orange cones waiting to be conquered. When the Alberta summer sky turned dark and the rain started coming down in sheets, most outdoor events would have packed it in. Not the dogs—or their handlers—at the 2025 Alberta Kennel Club Summer Classic. Held August 1–4, 2025, over the August long weekend at the Okotoks Agricultural Society grounds (17049 – 306 Ave. East, Foothills), this was one of Canada’s largest outdoor dog shows and only the second year the event had called Okotoks home after more than a decade at Spruce Meadows. What spectators and competitors got was pure small-town Alberta energy mixed with world-class canine athleticism—and a healthy dose of prairie weather drama. Alberta Kennel Club president Wendy Hamilton-Petkau put the top prize in perspective: “To win Best in Show is like winning in the Olympics.” Despite grey skies, muddy paths, and the occasional rumble of thunder, 750–1,000 spectators still showed up. Handlers and dogs simply adapted—exactly the resilience captured in the KassDays video. The weather becomes part of the story The title Storms & Show Dogs is no exaggeration. Contemporary reports described “wet paws and wagging tails,” with competitors and organizers pushing through rain that would have sidelined lesser events. Great Danes were notably well-represented in the Working Group throughout the weekend—entries in the 6–8 range on several days, with strong showings that included Group placements. It’s part of a broader trend many regulars have noticed: these gentle giants are becoming more visible at Western Canadian shows, bringing their impressive size, elegant movement, and calm presence to the rings. Looking ahead The 2025 Okotoks edition marked a successful public return after the previous year’s closed-to-spectators trial run. For 2026 the Summer Classic is already on the move again—this time to the Ranch House Grounds neighbouring the Calgary Polo Club (24041 306 Ave. W, Okotoks). The new site sits in the same Foothills County area just south of Calgary, close to Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School, and promises expansive grass for agility plus a picturesque Rocky Mountain backdrop. Held at the High River Agricultural Society grounds, the event transformed the grounds into a lively medieval village filled with artisan vendors, hearty food, live music, and plenty of hands-on history. The real star for us was the jousting. Watching those powerful horses thunder down the track with knights in full armour was thrilling—elegant, powerful, and full of skill. The horses stole the show with their grace and strength, whether charging in the joust or performing in demonstrations. The full-contact armoured combat was equally impressive, with knights clashing in exciting bouts that brought the medieval spirit to life. Beyond the arena, the faire offered a welcoming family atmosphere with craft stalls, period performers, and delicious festival eats.
